HAPPY NEW YEAR

On New Years eve we hear about making resolutions.

I prefer to stay with my awakening conversation with God.

"Good morning, God thank you for another day on this earth. Help me today to listen to whatever you are calling me to Be or Do. Be my surety. Bless this day those I love, those I have promised to pray for and those who are in need. May I be present to those you send my way today. Give me the wisdom to discern what you are calling me to and what the situation is calling me to Be. At the end of the day I give all to you, bless it, fix it and be with me as I rest in your care.

Happy New year to you and those you love

HOLY FAMILY DAY

today we remember the Holy Family, the parents of the child Jesus.

When we read of them in scripture we find little said, some joy at birth but in a stable because there was not room, a running to Egypt because the King wanted to kill their son, Jesus staying behind when they were on their way home from annual visit to the temple, a sassy teenager saying do you not know I must be doing my Fathers business, and there is more. It says Mary held these in her heart.

Sure sounds like our normal family, which we also may consider blessed as you try to parent your children in the right ways.

Most of life is just being faithful in the ordinary ups and downs of life.

We take some time today to pray for parents, others who are called to help the children of today to be loved and cared for. We pray for the orphans of Russia that are now denied a loving home and used as pawns in response to civil rights violations. We pray for the children our Sisters serve who have no meals everyday, clean water or hope for a meaningful future. We pray for the children of migrant workers who may be deported and our Sisters as they work to help them.

May each of us reach out and hug a child.

Peace

I hate to turn on the news as it is filled with sadness, loss and violence.

Behold I saw a  story of those who are reaching out and giving gifts to those in Sandy's wake. One persons suggested we do a good deed for someone to represent all the children who died. Goodness can prevail over violence.

I pray I too may do good deeds today endlessly.
who needs to count? Care to join me and put more peace into this world.

Mary's yes our gift

Today we recall Mary's yes to God's messenger that she will bear a son and he will be the long awaited for  Savior of the world. What a message to say yes to. I am sure it was not a one time yes. Our commitments we find are never a one time yes either.

Today in the story of Luke we read of Mary not only saying yes, not knowing how it will happen but her going out of her way to visit her older cousin Elizabeth who also is with child in her old age.

In our "Yes "we also can extend ourselves to those in need. This time of the year when we are all so busy rushing here and there may we not forget those who just need us to reach out to them, to be present to them. I am sure you know someone who needs your presence. May you have the wisdom to reach out to them.

Blessings to you and those you love as we celebrate Christ,s coming to be one with us.

BLACK FRIDAY

Years ago when I had little resources I still wanted to give those I cared for a gift for Christmas. I made coupon books with things I knew each person would like.

Thinking back was not such a bad idea. Most of us have little time so a coupon book with time with the person might be just the best gift. things like a meal out at their favorite restaurant, or a movie, coffee, a special trip to a museum or play etc. You get the idea.

This was very creative and much less frustrating than being pushed shoved and jostled around for the gift that really would they like it better than our time and attention?

A PATH TO HAPPINESS

Today in reading the Essence magazine I was touched by the editorial by Constance White. Yes, spiritual reading can be any found in many places not just certain spiritual books.

Constance shared 6 practices she feels will help us lead a happier life.

1. PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK
How often do we wait for someone else to recognize our achievements  They often do not know how hard it was for us to accomplish a particular task, but we know. So why not say to ourselves. Great job!

2.LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
one of my co-workers has a picture of a glass half full on her face book. Many see it as half-empty. Gratitude does wonders for us and our outlook. I am sure you can find something each day to be thankful for.

3. COUNT THE WAYS.
In this Constance is referring to our blessings. After watching what happened with Sandy I am sure it wouldn't take much to think of something to be grateful for. So if you can read this you are breathing some are not.

4. RETIRE THE SHOULD S
I once heard the Should train leaves every moment and the ride is free. Things we don't let go of or keep thinking I should have can lead to regret, guilt. I think every day has enough stress without adding some ourselves. Lately I heard someone ask Why do we create problems we then have to solve. So true. Each day has its own opportunities so no more Should's.

5 FORGIVE
We pray daily God forgive me as I forgive others. True, We may have been hurt but holding on to it puts us in bondage. I have found the person who hurt me no longer even remembers it or knows they did it. So why am I hanging onto it.

6. BECOME SELF-AWARE
We can reflect on things that upset us, depleted our happiness and make some changes in ourselves or those we relate to.  Perhaps we have become accustom to the drama and like it?

Hopefully Constance's 6 point and some of my comments will have you reflecting with me on how to have a happier day.
God bless you.

LOVE GOD LOVE NEIGHBOR

Today's scripture Jesus says there are only two things necessary.
Love God
Love your neighbor

As Christians, the way to live our life is contained in these two things.

Sounds easy to me until I did some reflection on my life. When is the last time I told God I love you? Behaved as if I loved God? Do I have other priorities that take the place of saying I love you God? Or do I settle for taking the time to converse with God only on Sundays or when I need help?

Love my neighbor, who do I think that is? Is it that staff member I would just not be with, is it the person who cut me off in traffic, is it the friend who seems to have other priorities different than mine, is it our family members who need our time and attention? Yes, it is.

Today, when God and I talked I said I will try to do better this week. Thanks for the reminder.

DONT FORGET TO SAY I LOVE YOU

A couple of years ago I would hear the Sister I live with say to her mom on the phone I love you too. I knew her mom had told her I love you.
I was feeling bad as my mom and dad had already passed away and no one was saying that to me or me to them.
God heard my inner frustration and out of the blue my brother started saying I love you. It had the same sort of feeling I was longing for. Over the years that has become very special conversation for us. We talk every night and end in the same way with our I love you. Not as a response to the other but from the depth of our hearts.
This morning before my shower I got a call my brother was in ED in the hospital at home. As I drove there I thought of all of the I love yous said and thanked God for them. I felt a peaceful feeling and felt whatever the day brought the I love you would always be in my heart.
My brother today while in ICU said" are you going to sit there all day looking at me?" "Go home and I love you". the nurses said he was okay for me to leave. I will go back tomorrow.
The 2 hr drive coming home I had plenty of time to reflect on I love you. I thought are there more people I should be saying I love you to while I still can.
It is never too late to begin. I really don't need a notice hanging in the bathroom somewhere to remind me it is never too late to say I love to whomever I feel I want to. How about you. Are there some I love you's you still need to say while there is still time?

REASONS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

Tonight we attended a talk by Bishop Skilba from Milwaukee on the topic of Vatican II.

The Wausau deanery is celebrating the year of Faith of the Catholic Church by having a series of talks on variety of topics.
Bishop Skilba traced for us some of history of Vatican II and its various document teachings and his personal experience of having been present at the council as a observer and a student priest studying in Rome at that time.

He emphasized although the implementation has been slow what would have made things better if there would have been an explanation of the change, why the change was made and how this will now better help in furthering the awareness of the working of God in the world. He indicated the changes have only begun and we too often think of change as an instantaneous thing rather than a slow process.

These reflections have application to many things in our daily lives.  Each day we deal with change and of course it is easier to change if we see the reason for the change and how it will bring something positive as an outcome.

So simple of principle but often forgotten. However,it is now a reminder for me to do this in my daily life as I deal with the changes I  encounter.

LEADERSHIP

In today scripture Jesus talks about the good servant one who is honest with his Master.

Today we think of this in our terms. The servant is the one whom someone has been asked to be in charge of something for for them. This is experienced in our day to day living  in may way such as the daycare staff, the person who helps you with your finances, your civic leader, the duties you are responsible for in your home, your workplace manager, director and the like.

All of us have a choice of being a good servant (one who fulfills the duties assigned) or being a unfaithful servant.

We all have people who are affected by our leadership. As the scripture states much is required of those persons which whom much is entrusted and more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.

We all have been given gifts and talents to develop and use for the good of others. It all depends upon how we use our talents and gifts. Do we use them to serve ourselves or to be in service of a better world.  How do each of us carry out our responsibilities to those who are affected by our actions.

LET IT RAIN

what a rainy two days. I am sure the ground is soaking this up and we will benefit from it in the spring.

Great day to water our own inner self, and perhaps we will see changes in spring as well.

Some say it is a great day to read a book, curl up with ones favorite blanket and take a pause in life.

Good time to look at what we read to nourish our inner self. What we read affects us more than we think. I sometimes feel the news is depressing and then again we read of someone one doing good.

Take look at what you read today and ask yourself how did this affect my inner self.

In the Readings for today the young man went away sad because he had too many things to give up to be able to accept the invite of Jesus to be his disciple.

BACK TO WORK

Back to work today, vacations are interesting. Sent the day trying to catch up but didn't yet!!
Heard someone got there office moved. I checked my door my name is still there.

One of my co-workers told me he got a promotion and a new job at another work place. I was very glad for him but I will miss him a lot. He is a very principled nice guy.

Another person got her office moved. Someone told me hospitals are always remodeling and moving stuff.

I heard many say welcome back, it is nice to be missed. I surely work with a great bunch of people who care about each other.

I thank God each day for the opportunity to be in ministry and to be in ministry at Saint Clare's Hospital. May you enjoy where ever God leads you to be.

CHANGING SEASONS

We just returned from a week trip to Bar Harbor Maine, all in all was very gorgeous drive. Sophie was a good trouper and did well in the car, probably as good as the two of us.
We enjoyed the changing of the seasons and the beauty of God's gracious world. The heavenly painter really out did herself in the array of colors.

I will admit that it was a long way to go but a dream of mine to see the ocean and the dessert island of Bar Harbor. We were on the furthest part of the USA without being in the ocean.

As we came home I also noted the change in the weather, cooler at night, most of our leaves are gone. Time to get out the warmer clothes, comforters and the like. Take out the frozen plants.

Winding down time seems at times more conducive to reflection. I know my personal season is changing as well. The time of being a wisdom figure so they say. I daily pray for God's guidance. We all have wisdom to share if we are willing.

Parents try to share wisdom with their children to keep them from learning the hard lessons they had to learn. I hear it doesn't always work.

May we also be willing to share wisdom with friends and  co-workers in this time of change.

Do Dogs go to heaven

Someone asked me if pets to to heaven.
Our loving God made all of creation for us to enjoy. He said it is good.
Why not in heaven as well.

CHANGING OF SEASONS

Today is a beautiful day outside, some frost did hit the plants on our deck and their time has come. The season is changing and today is fall time of the year.

I have also been asking God's help with the changing of seasons in one who I love. Some days he doesn't remember things. I pray for the gift to enjoy each encounter as he is moving closer to letting go in his life. I know at 96 this is to be expected but that is a intellectual thing and I am not there yet. His letting go is gradual and a good lesson for me.

These moments are hard lessons to learn as I sometimes get too far into the future and grieve the losses. I know I have my own letting go to embrace but somehow this seems different.

I take time to thank God for the gift of relationship we have.  I ask for the grace to live one day at a time.

I know life is a journey and God has been with me all the way and will be in days to come. It is just some side trails are not ones I would choose. Prayer helps me to go forward knowing God is my companion. Thank you for your prayers as well.

YEAR OF FAITH-SEEKING THE FACE OF JESUS

This coming church year we will be invited to celebrate a year of Faith.
The LaCrosse office of evangelization has broken this into 4 themes

Oct-Jan Seeking the Face of Jesus, the Face of God. Focus on faith and content of faith

Feb-April Seeking the Face of Jesus in Prayer. How do I pray and notice for what do I pray.

May-July Seeking the Face of Jesus in the Community of the Church. What does it mean for me to be in community with others.

Aug-November Seeing the Face of Jesus in Suffering and the Marginalized. It is evaluation how our faith leads us to care and have compassion on others.

These reflections lead us to important question? No matter what we believe we and ask ourselves Who is God? What does God want of me? Who am I? And what do I need to do to be faithful to who I am?

Remember our Jewish friends in prayer this week

This past Sunday at sundown the Jewish community began the practice of  Rosh HaShanah
Significant symbols of Rosh HaShanah include apples, honey and round loaves of challah. Apple slices dipped in honey represent our hope for a sweet new year and are traditionally accompanied by a short prayer before eating that goes: "May it by Thy will, O Lord, Our God, to grant us a year that is good and sweet." Challah, which is usually baked into braids, is shaped into round loaves of bread on Rosh HaShanah. The circular shape symbolizes the continuation of life.
On the second night of Rosh HaShanah it is customary to eat a fruit that is new to us for the season, saying the shehechiyanu blessing as we eat it to thank God for bringing us to this season. Pomegranates are a popular choice because Israel is often praised for its pomegranates and because, according to legend, pomegranates contain 613 seeds – one for each of the 613 mitzvot. Another reason for eating pomegranates on Rosh HaShanah has to do with the symbolic hope that our good deeds in the coming year will be as many as the seeds of the fruit.
Rosh HaSanah is also a time of self reflection a time of looking at ones life and how one has been living. It is a time of repentance, forgiveness and making decisions if one wants to change the way they have been living or acting. We all could spend a week in such manner and I believe the world would be a more peaceful kinder place to live.
Let us remember our Jewish friends this week as they begin their New Year and observe this week.

WHO DO YOU SAY I AM IN YOUR LIFE

Today Jesus asks who am I to you  in your daily life?
James says it is not only what we believe but what we do.
Can others tell by my behavior and what I say I am a follower of Jesus way.
Today in all we do we are the
living  Gospel of Jesus.
Is it Good News

Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother celebration day

Today the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother celebrate our feast day. A day in which we remember especially the sorrows the Mother of Jesus experienced and reflect on our mission to stand with those who are not served, those on the margins of society, those who are rejected

How would a mother feel at as her child enters the community of the believers to be told you will suffer many things because of this child. Simeon gave this message to Mary as she presented her child to him.
How would you feel having to leave your homeland and run to a foreign county because the leadership was looking  for you and your child to kill him.

How would you feel seeing your child mocked, scourged and then made to carry his death cross along the streets, to a jeering crowd only to be crucified as a common criminal.

Every day we encounter many mothers who are experiencing the same situations. We pray we as Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, or model Mary will help us reach out to them to stand with them.

We also thank today all those who stand with us, work with us to continue to serve those in need especially the poor.

I remember you today in my prayers.

FEED THE HUNGRY

Raised $1,606.00 for Sister Corita a Sister of the Sorrowful Mother working in the
SSM Fundacion in Dominican Republic

I am so proud of the employees volunteers and community people that visit the restaurant at Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital. Under the direction of one of the Administrative Food service staff they small change at the check out register all year long. It is amazing what small change can turn into.
This year we were blessed with an anonymous donor who matched the funds collected.

I called Sister Corita and informed her of the amount collected. She was ecstatic and said now I can provide them with food for a year. Each month Sister Corita takes a paper bag filled with rice, beans, and other staples to the families living in the Hoyo which is along the river bank in Santiago.

I pray for God's blessings on all those who generously gave their change to make this happen.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

Today was a day of thanking our staff, volunteers and contract chaplains.
This morning we had administrative team, chaplain and Sister Sharee go around and bless the hands of the employees at Saint Clare's, Ministry Medical group Weston and Rib Mountain and the staff of the Diagnostic and Treatment center.. We said we bless these hands and those you serve and we bless and appreciate you. It is touching and I always look forward to this blessing. So many hands doing so much in the name of the healing ministry of Jesus.

My little Hindu doctor got his hands blessed. In reality there are various religious beliefs among our staff but one purpose to help those in need who need what we have to offer in a way that helps them and keeps their dignity.

This afternoon we had an appreciation tea for eucharistic ministers, prayer team members, chaplains and volunteers with the No one Dies alone program. It was a time where our President could say thank you to these dedicated persons. They also go their hands blessed if they so wished.

It is great to have a day of thanks. Hopefully we will have many more

ANGELS IN HEAVEN

Tonight we had the memorial service in the chapel for parents who lost a baby at Saint Clare's Hospital.
As part of the perinatal bereavement program parents can choose to have the hospital bury their unborn child. We honor all products of conception and invite the parents to come to the prayer service which is followed by  coffee and sharing prior to going to the cemetery.
We are blessed to have Brainard funeral establishment who helps us by providing the urn for the remains to be buried in a respectful manner. Several families attended this prayer service tonight.
We have this service during our mission and values week honor the unborn and to help families who wish to participate to have a respectful service for their child.
Mothers never forget their child. Today we join in prayer for parents who have lost a child. We pray they may now feel some comfort. May the angels we honored look down and smile upon us this night

CELEBRATE OUR VALUES

This week in all of our ministries we are celebrating the

values of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother as lived

out in Ministry Health Care Ministries.

The reason for choosing this week is that during this week we also celebrate the feast of the Sorrowful Mother our patroness.

The values that Ministry Health care choose to guide our actions are the following:

Values

The Values of our Founding Sisters guide our actions...

Presence

We treat others with dignity and respect so each
person feels important and worthwhile. We engage
people in decisions that affect them.

Service

We provide excellent service, care and value.

Vision

We use innovation and creativity to improve the
health of the communities we serve and to sustain
and grow our health care ministry.

Justice

We are a voice for the voiceless. We advocate for the
most vulnerable and act responsibly on their behalf.
We do all we can to make health care affordable in
our communities.

Hopefully these values can be a guide for you in your

relationships with others and in what you do.

VOICE FOR THE POOR

Today we remember the founder of the Saint Vincent DePaul society. He was ordinary man who has a passion for helping the poor. With a few friends he started to help those in need, others joined in helping it was the beginning of the Saint Vincent DePaul society.

He was not a priest but a dedicated lay person. It is amazing what one person can do with passion and concern for those in need.
If you have a Vincent DePaul society in your area consider helping them with their mission. You too can be " A voice for the Poor"

Why the Voice of the Poor?
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is concerned not only

with alleviating need but also with identifying those

structures, societal and legislative, that cause and

perpetuate poverty. This mission manifests itself in the

Society’s admonition to “End Poverty Through Systemic

Change.”

REMEMBERING MOTHER TERESA

Today is the day we remember Mother Theresa. She did ordinary things in an extra ordinary way.

None of us will most likely be called upon to do something big, but each day we have many little things we can do the make the life of someone else better and for them to know they are loved.

REMEMBER EVERYONE TODAY- JOBS AND JOBLESS

Remember everyone today in your thoughts and prayers. Those who have jobs that are often forgotten, those who help us with our daily lives, those who have no job and cant find one.
At home I learned a honest days work for honest days wage. My parents both were Aides at the Northern Colony in Chippewa Falls. They took great pride in their work and the people they cared for. Worked long hours for little pay. I don't recall them ever getting recognized for their hard work. Their recognition was the satisfaction they did their best.
As we go about our daily lives this week, let us take a few moments to thank those we meet for the work they do.
Happy Labor day to you and thank you.

LOVE VERSUS RULES

In today's scripture reflection Jesus chastises the pharisees and the religious leaders for insisting all the various minute rules  be followed with no regard for compassion, hospitality or care for the poor.

They were more interested in putting burdens on people than helping relieve burdens. Be sure to wash your, kettles, and other pots before eating but do not be concerned about welcoming the guest, greeting them and taking care of their needs after walking in the dirty dusty streets.

Am I more concerned about my life rules than I am about meeting people where they are at. Do I even acknowledge I have life rules, and do I know what they are. If not listen to how many times you say should or think they should, I should do this or that.

In the hospital setting, some days anxious afraid family members cant follow the rules of numbers of people to visit or limit time. They just need someone to calmly talk to them answer their questions and ease the tension.

Do I judge the type and quality of relationships of others by imposing and applying my life rules.

Can I cope with the breaking away of so many people who are just tying to identify themselves and their beliefs, values and life's meaning.

God help me let loose on some of my rules. I know you only had two rules. Love God and for me to Love my neighbor as I love myself.

TRUE FRIENDS A RARE TREASURE

Today in scripture we learn of those who found Jesus sayings and way of life too hard to accept. They no longer followed him and went back to their original way of believing and acting. Jesus then asked his closest friends will  you too leave me?

I am sure you too have has an experience where those you thought were your supporters, liked minded friends no longer were friends or supporters because of what you believe or what you stand for.

We all have had the painful experience of  realizing who are really our friends through rough times. Many a surprise for me when it came to standing for justice issues.  Many a tear has been as well.

Today treasure your few true friends, tell them you treasure them.

GOD CAN WRITE STRAIGHT WITH CROOKED LINES

Today we remember the philosopher and mystic Simone Weil.

I have always admired her and her solidarity with all those who are outside of the organized religion. It is said she could not bear to separate herself from " the immense and unfortunate multitude of unbelievers"

Simone was born in France of a nonreligious Jewish family. She had an esteemed teaching career but would take a leave from teaching to work in the factories with the working class.

Her life was a search for her own religious truth. She became more and more Christ centered but felt she should be in solidarity with those who did not receive the gift of faith. She felt this was her vocation.

I find  myself pondering do I take my faith for granted? Who am I willing to stand with who society has marginalized?

Simone was identified with the struggles of her time and the effect on the human condition. Am I even aware of the struggles of the poor, the working class, or am I in denial there is a class system in my country? For me seeing is a call to action knowing there is always a reaction to what we do to help those in need.

NOTHING GOES UNHEEDED BY GOD

Religious and priests daily pray the Divine office which is broken down into morning and evening prayers consisting of psalms , scripture readings, reflection time, intercessions and closing prayers.

Today I liked the psalm which was 19:2-7 which brought to mind " The heavens declare the glory of God....no speech, no word, whose voice goes unheeded; their sound goes forth though all the earth."

This is comforting to know God not only hears our prayers but our sighs or groans and they do not go unheeded by God.

I am sure there are some days for you as well as there is for me that groans and sighs are the best prayer we can put forth. Rejoice and be comforted to know they too are heard by God.

ASK AND YOU SHALL BE HEARD

"I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fear

Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles."

I very like the psalm in today's readings. It gives me much courage and hope. Some days feel like Oh God just stop the merry-go-round and let me off.
These are the days when I pray I wonder if God hears my prayers.

I can not count the times God has saved me from lot of trouble and has heard my prayers no matter how foolish they are.

I pray for you that your week may go well and you may not hesitate to ask God for what you need no matter how foolish you think it may be.

BLESSED AMONG US-JESSICA POWERS POET/NUN

Today we remember the death anniversary of Jessica Powers, a Carmelite poet. In the convent in Pewaukee she was named Sister Miriam.

Jessica was born and raised in  Cat Tail Valley in rural Wisconsin. He father died when she was a teen and she became responsible for the siblings. She later attended Marquette University, later doing secretarial work in Chicago. During these years she had poetry published in the American poetry magazine and wrote a book of poems. She moved to New York and was part of the Catholic Poetry society.

In her looking for God and longing for love which she felt only God could give she returned to Wisconsin and joined the Carmelite Sisters who at that time were Milwaukee and later under her direction constructed a monastery in Pewaukee. There Jessica died Aug 18,1988 at 83

During her life's journey she wrote over 150 poems which today are a inspiration to many. She addressed God as the "Great Undoer who has torn apart/the walls I build against a human heart... the repairer of fences turning my paths to rest:"

Her poems have been a spiritual guide and strength for me over the years. During this past retreat I reflected on the Poem Master Beggar. In summary the message is God not only accepts what I have willingly given him but wants all I have. Some days that is more than I am willing to give. How about you?

VACATION WITH GOD

Going on vacation with God tomorrow for week.I am going to the Jesuit Retreat Center in Oshkosh. This is also called retreat.

A spiritual retreat is a time of being alone with God not a planning meeting as we use the word in the business world.

I have no agenda or expectations. It is a beautiful place to rest relax, walk around lake winnebago, have coffee/tea with God and listen. The chapel is all glass windows and overlooks the lake, gorgeous.

I will certainly be speaking with God of your wishes, concerns and needs as well as for those I do not know who may be asking for prayer as they read of this.. Some staff at work sent me what they wanted me to pray for. I will include you and your needs in prayer as well.

Keep me also in prayer that I may continue to have open heart, mind, ears and eyes. Never know how the message may come.

Until next Sunday have a super good week, be gentle with your self.

Olympics ongoing training for the dream

I have been watching the Olympics and how hard they train and the time to compete is so short.

I find myself asking am I as committed to the things I need to do for my life's dream?

What would that on going  preparation be?

Hosea says love tenderly, act justly, walk humbly with your God.

Yes that is enough!!

Witnessed today the effect one person can have on the world

This morning went to Howard Young in Woodruff for the dedication of a park to Dr. Kate. Dr. Kate was very connected to the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother in the North woods. She was woman of great compassion and service to those in need.

It was very touching to hear the stories told. Some of the babies she delivered were there. Dr.Kate was know as the angel on  snow shoes, so that should give you an idea of what she was about.

The Sisters prayed she would get her own hospital. One of her nurses husband was a geometry teacher at local school.  She shared the story of the one penny collection. The children had no idea what a million of anything looked like. One of the students involved in this was there to share the story. they started a collection of pennies in the city and later nation wide. They collected a million pennies, had a parade to celebrate this feat. The student shared she then had to go to the school auditorium and sit in a large kettle with the million pennies. People came from all over to see this and threw more money at the kettle. They collected more than enough money to finish Dr. Kate's hospital, buy equipment and have some left over for operations.

Today I gained more that I imagined. The profound effect that one person with a vision and passion can have in this world. She simply did what she believed in with care and compassion.

Life's journey

Today visited my brother in Chippewa Falls, it is his 96 birthday. He says his legs are some what weak today but so would mine be if they are 96 years old. I brought cake for him and the rest of his assisted living friends and a flower. Much appreciated.

We went out to eat at his favorite place and his favorite waitress made him pecan muffin with a candle. He was thrilled she remembered it was his birthday.

It takes so little to make someone you love happy.

I am sure you have done something today to also make someone you love happy. Isn't it grand !!

Today-appreciate

I am sure you are as upset and startled as I am about the shooting in Colorado. It truly is a senseless act by a very sick person.

The lesson for me today is to tell those I meet, work with and love that I appreciate them. Life is truly short and I don't want to miss  the chance to let them know I care.

I did take a few moments today to pray for everyone involved, those hurt, the survivors and their loved ones. . I then said a prayer for the shooter because I don't know the pain he has to do such a thing.

Been through it before

Listened to an interesting reflection today on change. Change is the norm and we all have been though it before. In some cases it isn't easy and others a breeze but in either case we all have made it and learned something from it.

Sometimes it helps to think of positive change we made it through. For me becoming a RN, graduating from Marquette when I was on probation in school during most of my earlier studies. Graduation with a MS degree. Having the grace to follow God's call as a religious to be able to witness God's love for me so others can see God's love for them.

The most recent changes of getting older is really interesting. Learning to accept the things I would like to do but best not, like ride a motorcycle, bungee jump, hike the Appalachian trail  and so many more. Lucky we have dreams. Then again age does provide some wisdom which one can freely share with another.

Recently lot of changes at my ministry. New directors to get to know and see how they do things. I did get comfortable with the ones who left. Isn't that the way it always goes.

In the painful changes I have experienced when it was all over and done there remained some positive growth for me. It is at them time I didn't always think that would happen. I learned hang in there as it will change again. Sometimes that is consoling and sometimes well not so.

Tomorrow brings a new day to experience in a new way. May you enjoy the changes in your life. Don't forget to take the time to enjoy the ride.

Life's journey

Today I went to see my brother who is an assisted living facility in Chippewa Falls. He is great and all is well. He will be 96 at months end. He is walking slower but he tells me so will you when you are 96!

While there I met on of the jocks from my high school graduation class. He was visiting his older brother. My classmate is on his 2nd wife, had heart surgery and did not look like the jock from High school. It is amazing what the years can do or is it our perspective or is it lifestyle?

I had a safe drive there and back. It is always amazing to me what thoughts go through my mind when I have a few (4) hours of private alone time with no radio just with ones inner self.

Thank you God for being there for me, guiding me on the right path, putting persons in my journey to assist me. I pray you grant the same for all those who are friends, co-workers and those who have asked for prayers.

Spirituality of change

There is a lot of change going on in my work life right now.  We have several new Directors at who started this past week. Seeing the Saint Clare's Ministry through new eyes is very interesting. Two have commented on how friendly everyone is.

Some Directors are leaving for new opportunities. I told one I am grieving and in another day in denial. I have become accustom to how I have worked with them and the new are not known yet.

I am glad to hear new Directors are experiencing friendly welcome atmosphere. Because as you know I don't believe the values should be on the wall in a mission statement but lived in the lives of everyone in the organization.

Jesus calls us into a life in his kingdom where change is not optional.
He requires a lifestyle of change. Jesus told his followers, “I tell you the
truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom or Heaven." I pray we can take a minute to reflect on how a little child sees things trusting each day that loved ones will be there for them.

That all sounds very doable. Which of us does not like a little child's way of seeing the world. But most of us are not that little child anymore. Some have lost their ability to trust that all will work out.  For these change is more difficult.

Have you tried to change your diet? Get out on the other side of the bed? Feed yourself with other hand? I had to make a lot of changes in how I did everyday life when I had surgery on my right hand, believe me it wasn't easy.

Joyce Rupp a spiritual writer says unless you say goodbye you cant say hello.

So good bye to the old and hello to the new whatever it might be. In the meantime I pray for the grace to say thank you to what was and welcome, come in to what might be.

How are you with change?

Life Choices

The other day I shared I am in process of looking at several life choices. Don't worry retirement isn't one at this time.

The Gospel for this weekend was interesting. It talked about Jesus inability to help those who had no faith in Him, or in God's message. He proved a prophet is not accepted by those who are familiar with them. Those who are familiar only see the ordinary and do not hear the message that is given. Am I willing to be a prophet if it mean not being accepted?

Paul talked about asking God to relieve him from a thorn in his side. Whatever that was it didn't happen. Paul goes on to say my grace is sufficient for you. I believe that but in times of uncertainty
I would prefer a note from God!

I mentioned I started reading the book Walking with God in a fragile world.   I asked myself what are the messages for me in these chapters?

Frederick Buechner, ordained Presbyterian minister says " the world has always been fragile and for some reason God made it that way". We have a choice from being children of God or problem children. He further explains there cross does not have a body as Jesus has risen from the dead. He doesn't suffer any more but Christians are called to be his body"

Maybe that is what Paul was experiencing. Question I have is what do I do with my suffering, with the suffering of others that I experience. Am I a source of hope or false hope by saying you will be alright.

Another chapter by William Coffin, who worked for CIA, studied theology and became a minister, said "all religions are different--that is certain. But most religions seek to fulfill the same function, that is, they strive to convert people from being self-preoccupation to the wholehearted giving up of oneself in the love for God and for others. St.Paul said 'make love your aim"

What does all this mean to me, Whatever choice that is made it needs to be one in which the Love of God and God's people is central and I am energized to this end.

Searching

I have the day off. Not too sure what that means. There always seems so much to do, stove to clean, basement cob webs to chase, flower garden to weed.. It is too hot to have much ambition.
Did some essential shopping this morning you know the stuff we need to live in peace and quiet.
Is it a good day for soul searching? Does it really matter as my soul searches as it wishes. There are ever ending questions.
Am I making a difference where I am or am I just there and it doesn't matter if I make a difference or am I to just me and be satisfied with not knowing if I make a difference?
Am I doing what I am called to do to Be? My spiritual director says God doesn't care what I choose, both choices are equal and good.
Is endless activity a distraction from inner reflection or does the activity of the day have a key to be found?
Went to our home library and stood there. A book jumped at me titled walking with God in a fragile world.
God surely works in interesting ways.
Keep in touch will let you know what gives with this venture.

The poor you will always have with you

Helpless feelings day today.
Met one employee yesterday who asked for the Sisters to pray for her she said "I have cancer of the breast" and walked out of my office. It was like I have a mosquito bite. Saw her today and asked how she is she said I am truly in my head but now they think it might be in both breasts. I did offer to be there for her. Wished I could do more. I realize grieving is a process and not an event.
Another employee came today and asked for some help, she is evicted has two very little children, she is working s few hours when she can which is not often, applying for disability, no gas money and no way to move and no place to move to. I tried to give her what little assistance we could give by some gas money to get to some places that might help her.
It's in times like these one feels so helpless, at least I do. It is hard to be thankful with what I have when others are hurting and have little.
Say a prayer something good happens for them.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Today we celebrate on  the 4th of July the Independence celebration of our country. We have freedom of speech, the right to gather, to worship, to live where we want, to express our religion in public, choose our friends, to seek work, to have a education, to have recalls, have a voice in our government. Women can vote, drive, choose their partner in life, work, be the primary wage earner. We can choose and seek our vocation in life.

As we watch the news we know these rights and freedoms are not available to many of the world. Many suffer much under oppressive systems. Sometimes we add to the oppressive system by our behaviors in not respecting the freedom of those with whom we come in contact. Why?

Today let us pray we don't take our freedom for granted. Let us thank God for the country in which we live.

We also need to take care of where we live so we can continue to enjoy where we live. Sensitivity to creation is part of freedom and not to be taken for granted. Many are enjoying the out of doors this day, the woods, camp grounds, water or just being able to sit on their deck or enjoy their back yard without fear of being harmed.

Happy Independence day to all and treasure your independence. Follow your dream.

PRAY FOR VOCATIONS

On the 25th of each month the SSM Sisters pray for those discerning their vocation. Each of us has a vocation calling to be of service.

How did you decide your life vocation? I don't mean job or way you earn a living. Something spurred you to make a life commitment.

I think of my friends who committed themselves to marriage. Many of them are no longer married. Is it when the going got tough they got going?

Any life choice takes dealing with the ups and downs, the unplanned for disappointments, the resolve to work it through.

Today many seem afraid of commitments. Maybe those of us who have made commitments don't share it in a positive light?

Take a moment say a prayer for those discerning life choices. Don't feel afraid to talk about commitment and encourage others to discuss their concerns, and choices.

BELATED FATHERS DAY

I have had some trouble getting my blog to work. Had to do a new download. Sorry

I decided it never too late to remember all the Fathers in our lives. My dad was my best friend, confidant, one who understood me. I realize not everyone has had that experience with their father.

Jesus came to tell us of our Heavenly Father. One who loves us unconditionally, protects us as a mother with her chick under her wing, sent Jesus to tell us of His love. You can always count on your Father in heaven.

So we thank God for fathers in our lives and say a prayer for them

RECONCILE

The bible readings the past couple of days are all about forgiveness and not judging others.

Really we don't know the reason why people do what they do and we get upset without bothering to ask them.

Jesus is strong about this don't bring your gifts to the altar unless you are reconciled with brother. If you recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there and go first and be reconciled.

This is really a hard thing to do. I have found it easier when at the beginning I pray for those who I have had a disagreement or some other upsetting situation. God will give the grace to say I am sorry. It doesn't matter if the other says they are sorry.

In the 12 step program it suggests we make a list of all we have offended and then make a amends whenever possible. This is good advice in life for everyone.

GOD'S PRESENCE TO OTHERS

Today we celebrate the feast of the Body of Christ which is the presence of Jesus with us in Communion.

This feast is all about relationships. Jesus with us in leaving us the Eucharist (communion) as a way he is present to us and in us. Jesus present in us gives us the opportunity to take His presence with us when we interact in our daily lives.

One thing I like about communion is everyone who goes to receive the Body and Blood of Christ are equals. It doesn't matter you education, political leanings, job, salary, number of friends etc. We are all the same. That gives me to think about is that how I go about my day. Is everyone I meet equal or are some receiving  more of my time and attention due to their status.

In church we sing "we are one" After I leave church do I carry that message into my day, my ministry.

SUMMER RELAXATION PRAYER

Summer weather means swimming, boating, fishing, sitting in the sun, reading a favorite book, visiting with friends and may other activities.

The following prayer offers thanks and praise for the sun and warmth that make summer recreation possible:

“God of the sun, thank you for the warmth and heat of summer, and for the activities I love so much .I imagine the sun’s warmth as Your warmth, radiating out into the world and bringing everything light and life.

Let me rejoice in You, this summer and always.

Let me be prudent in the time I spend outside so I do no harm to myself or those with me.

Let me let go of the business of the week and relax in the beauty of Your creation.
 Amen.”

CHERISHING WHAT WE HAVE

Recently I read a article by Constance C.R. White who is the editor-in-chief of Essence July 2012 issue.

She talked about how we often want to be and have what we don't have.

Last week I talked to a nurse with really, I mean  really curly hair. she liked it but said once someone told her to straighten it and she didn't know who she was after that. So she never did that again.

Once when a teen I got a permanent again I didn't feel I was myself so I didn't do that again.

Constance talked about the white woman who sun tanned and looked awful and was accused of subjecting her 5 year old child to the tanning.

Constance goes on to say "when we do that, we rob ourselves of the joy and satisfaction that comes with appreciating our blessings. At worst, we inflict deep wounds on our psyches, because the only way to be truly happy is to accept and value what we have. This month let us commit to cherishing exactly who we are"

If you would like to learn more about Constance you can follow her on twitter@cwhitesessence

REMEMBERING

It is a great gift to lay down one's life for their friend. Greater still to lay down ones life that others may live in freedom.

Today may we take a few moments to pray for those who have given up school plans, jobs, families, friends to serve our country that we and others may live in freedom.

I am sure no one plans to die but is aware there is a possibility that may happen.

Firefighters, police and medical transport people also risk giving their live in service for us. If you see one today or this week please go up to them and thank them for their service that you may to continue to live in peace.

Have a safe holiday and enjoy the freedom to do what ever you find relaxing today.
