Blessed New Year to to you.
I was thinking of the past year and all the blessings and opportunities that God provided to me.
I thank God for the goodness and love I have experienced and witnessed.

I wish for you best of all good things for the coming year.

I believe the what we need to do in the coming year, with God's grace, to be our best selves, one day at a time.

Happy and Blessed New Year 2012

WORLD DAY OF PEACE JAN 1 2012

In addition to it being New Years Day the Catholic Church celebrates it as World day of Peace. I did read the Pope's letter to the youth for this day. I feel there is alot we all can reflect on in terms of our role in creating Peace and Justice and extending ourselves to the youth we meet.

The pope wrote "peace and justice are built on a profound respect for every human being helping others to live a life consonant with this supreme dignity"

The pope "encourages all of us adults not just the teachers to be more attentive to the hopes and fears of young people today, along with their search for true values. Adults have a serious responsibility to help the young fulfill their potential, not just by sharing information with them, but in being examples of what it means to live lives marked by the joy of faith, charity and respect for others"

I worry about this age of latch-key children who come home from school and no one is there, those who spend their days influenced by day care, baby sitters or no one at all. What can I do to be some sign of hope for them?

We all meet young people in the course of our day. Do we say hello, how are you? Do we have the time to take a minute to listen to the response?

I remember one day someone said how are you and I said sick and they said good. I knew they were not really interested in listening to me or my response. It was rote response.

I am grateful at our house we do eat breakfast and evening meal together. Sharing our plans for the day and at the end of the day sharing how the day went and how was God experienced in this day. It really doesn't take that much time.

What are some ways you can be more present to youth during the coming year?

Religious traditions-family values

Today's reading is about Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the temple to be presented to Simeon. Both parents were amazed at what was said about their child. (Luke 2:22,28,30-33)

I have attended many a baptism, promised are made to raise this child of God, knowing a loving God. Promises by parents and godparents alike. Now begins the journey of teaching this child God's love. After all God lives within each of us.

Jesus learned his Jewish faith and traditions from Mary and Joseph. He learned the stories of the prophets before him their predictions, their pronouncement of how God was with His people.

All the pictures I have seen of Mary are ones where she is lovingly holding her son. All the pictures of Joseph are those teaching Jesus. They sought to give Jesus the best of their faith and values.

This reminds me to reflect on what values have others experienced from me?

Although I do not have any physically born children I have many who have called me and treated me like a mother. I have tried to guide them in their discernment in making good decisions. I have tried to let them know God is there for them. I also have tried to show them care and love that God has given to me.

Taking a few moments each day in mediation is a good way to reduce stress, guide us each day in the daily journey and making our life abit more God centered.

Try it you will like it!

Holy Innocents--recaptured

Today in the church calendar we remember the Holy Innocents who are the children massacred by Herod.

Whether the it really happened or not is not important. the story is told to exemplify how terrible a man Herod was.

In this day it seems not much has changed. Terrible people still are around. The baby sitter who hit a little girl in the head until dead. Innocent children killed every day in our cities.  Why are we collecting coats for kids? Should not a family be able to provide their child with a coat?

In a world with this going on how hard is it for our children to maintain their innocence?  Are we helping them by not discouraging their fantasy dreams and imaginary play.

Each of us has a little child within us. Do we let them express themselves? Today let us do whatever we can to reach out to ease the the suffering of the children we see, the little ones in our own part of the world. It is easier to think of those far away we don't have to look into their eyes.

Also take a few minutes with your own inner child and ask them what she/he needs. Maybe just a good time out to play.  At one time when I was mediating on the rooms in my inner house, I realized I didn't have a play space. It was a surprise to me in that I realized I had forgotten how to play. When have you last played? It is never too late to start.

Traditions--Drinking Love of St John

Did you ever wonder what was the reason for some of the traditions you have experienced in your life time?

In the early years of my formation on this Day we got a glass of wine and all prayed and drank it as the Love of St. John.  I found myself today asking what was that all about. I don't recall anyone explaining it to me.

A little research lead me to the answer. the story goes as follows:

Today, this third day of Christmas, is the Feast of St. John.
Though he wasn't martyred, it wasn't for his enemies' lack of trying. According to legend, he was served poisoned wine, but survived because he blessed the wine before he put it to his lips; the poison rose from the chalice in the shape of a serpent. In his happy memory, Catholics bring wine to church, which the priest blesses, turning it into a sacramental called the "Love of St. John." Catholics use this sacramental wine for special occasions throughout the year and to give to the sick.

When it is drunk on his Feast Day, we drink it before dinner as a toast to St. John. The Father of the house lifts his glass toward Mother and says, "I drink you the love of St. John." The Mother replies "I thank you for the Love of St. John" and then turns to the oldest child, lifts her glass, and says, "I drink you the love of St. John..." -- and on it goes down the line until each has been toasted.

If you have a big family may be very interesting!!. It reminded me of the Jewish Seder meal I was privileged to be a part of at my friends house. I surely did feel the sugar buzz by the end of that meal.

The wine may be drunk as is, out of the bottle, or may be prepared as in this recipe:
St. John's Love (serves 8)

1 quart red wine
3 whole cloves
1/16 teaspoon ground cardamom
2 two-inch cinnamon sticks
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar

Pour the wine into a large saucepan. Add the remaining ingredients. Boil for 5 minutes (this pretty much evaporates all of the alcohol). Serve hot, clinking glasses with the toast "Drink the love of St. John!" I suggest doing this in front of a roaring fire!
May you enjoy your new tradition and follow the example of Saint John when he said Loving one another is what the Gospel is all about.
Have a great day.

Are you willing to act on your beliefs?

Today in Catholic churches we remember Saint Stephen who was stoned because he was a follower of Christ.

Every day we hear of modern martyrs who are dying for their faith. Most recently in Africa those who died just because they wanted to worship at Christmas.
Those who die by hands of Taliban because the Taliban believe they are trying to convert others.

The reality of it all is that Jesus life began in a wood stable, with his dying on a wood cross. Jesus stood for compassion, justice and forgiveness. Thank God for Easter!!!

Are you willing to stand for compassion, justice and forgiveness? At what cost? Is there someone before the new year comes that you need to reach out to?

We may not be asked to give our life's blood for the Way,  but we are asked to give our life in service to this way of life. I pray for the grace for myself and all of you that we may live a life of servant hood.

Why a Christmas crib

The origin of the Christmas Crib (or Manger or Nativity scene - first ascribed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 celebrated the Feast of the Nativity in a new way that led to a new devotional practice. Saint Francis sent for his friend, Giovanni Vellita, a landowner in Greccio where Francis had a favorite hermitage. "If now it seems good to thee that we should celebrate this feast together, go before me to Greccio and prepare everything as I tell thee. I desire to represent the birth of that Child in Bethlehem in such a way that with our bodily eyes we may see what He Suffered for lack of the necessities of a newborn babe and how He lay in a manger between the ox and ass."

Many brothers and good people came at Francis's bidding, and during the night the weather also was beautiful. Many lights were kindled, songs and hymns were sung with great solemnity so that the whole wood echoed with the sound , and the man of God stood by the manger, filled with the utmost joy, and shedding tears of devotion and compassion. By his order the manger had been so arranged that Mass was celebrated on it, and blessed Francis...sang the gospel and preached to the people on the Nativity of Christ our King, and whenever he pronounced his name with infinite tenderness he called Him the 'little Babe of Bethlehem.'" (Nesta Robeck, The Christmas Crib, Milwaukee: Bruce Publishing Company, 1956, p. 45-47.)

Blessed Christmas to you and those you love

Hurrah, last day of going to Saint Clare's & DTC until Jan 3. What am I going to do? Whatever the spirit moves me to do.
I wish you and your loved ones a Blessed Christmas. May you know the love of friends, the support of those who care, and the peace of knowing you have tried this advent to give of your self those those who needed what it was you had to give. Maybe service you did, or a little time to listen, or saying a prayer for them. Whatever it was may you find it gave you more joy that what you gave.

Blessed and happy Christmas to you and those you love. Yes animals are included!!

God loves all creatures

A Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard.
During the night the folks came across this scene.
An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep.
He chose baby Jesus as his comfort.
No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night.

Thanking others as a practice

Today we had a leadership training all day on the principles of Studer which if implemented show increase in patient satisfaction.

In thinking about that I believe if implemented in our daily life would also improve our relationships with others and create a more peaceful caring world.

We talked about sending thank you notes to those who we see, experience doing good. In our ordinary day we have been taught to thank people for gifts. What would happen if we thanked our grocery store line person for helping us check out, or thank our mail delivery person for delivering our mail, or our family members for something they do? We can all find some little thing to say thank you in appreciation. What if they payed it forward!! Think of the impact it would be. What would happen if you thanked your children for doing their chores in stead of getting after them to do them. What if we thanked our employer for providing a job for me to use my skills and abilities.

We also talked about rounding which means asking those who were are responsible for what is going well, do they have the things they need to do their job, is there someone they would like to recognize and what would they suggest are some things that would make things better. What if we asked our family what do they need to be a better member of this family, relationship or something similar, do they have what they need in this relationship, who would they like to acknowledge in the family, and what could be done to make our family better? Our relationship better?

I was just thinking these tools can be used for personal situations as well as at our workplace.

Today in my reading about those "Blessed Among" it was a reminder to remember a great teacher and prophet, Rabbi Abraham Heschel. He died on Dec 23, 1972.

He felt his vocation(calling) was to connect the mystical world of Hasidic Judaism with the modern world of "man in search of meaning" He left Poland right before the Nazi invasion. He was expelled from teaching because he was Jewish.

Rabbi Abraham had a great deal to do with the renewal of Judaism and he also influenced the Christian world. He was a great lover of justice and a courageous champion of peace and civil rights.

I thought of him as I believe he also followed the principles we learned today at our sessions. That is to be present to the other, to search ways to help them to grow as persons and be willing to act responsibly in this world.

Is there someone you could write a thank you note to today? That might be the best Christmas present they received all year!!!

O Antiphons

O Antiphons are songs of praise from the old testament to tell us during advent of the coming of the Messiah.

Today we pray O root of Jesse.
"O Root of Jesse’s stem,
sign of God's love for all his people:
come to save us without delay!

I don't know about you but in my life time I have prayed for deliverance. O God come and save me. I recall the answer was "who asked you to go there in the first place?"

I am sure I am not the only one who was in a situation of asking God to get me out of a situation I created. God did come to my aid. The question was did I learn anything?

Root of Jesse's stem is a sign of God's love for all of his people.

In our final preparations for Christmas let us remember it is really all about God's love for all of us. Let us take time to share the love we have been given.

Deep faith in God's plan for me

Today's reading was the angel appearing to Mary and giving her the message of God's plan for her to become the Mother of Jesus.
She did ask how can this be? She then said be it done to me according to the message.

We all have opportunities when are aware God has a plan for us. Sometimes we also say how can this be?

I can think of several occasions when I knew what God was asking of me and I said no it cant be. God acts with our consent same as God did with Mary. I did say yes. Now looking back at those situations I realize it was part of God's plan for me. I just could not see it at the time.

In what way do you see God effecting the decisions you make?

We are starting the days before we celebrate the birthday of Jesus. May our spirits be ready to celebrate Jesus coming among us, becoming one of us and teaching us about the love of God.

May you have a good preparation week. Know what isn't done, isn't done. To those who love you it wont matter, what counts is your presence.

What are your connections?

Today the reading talk about the genealogy of Jesus.
In the East Asian there is a belief(legend) that a child is born with an invisible red thread that connects the child's soul to all who have gone before and will come in the future. It is believed every birthday the cord shortens which brings the child closer to those they are to meet.

The reading of today connects Jesus with all those who came before him, the prophets and those who will follow him. For Matthew, this Jesus is the fulfillment of a world God envisioned in the first place, a world with peace and justice.

Advent theme is alot about peace and justice. We are all connected in some way.

I did spend some time a couple of years ago working on our family genealogy. My brother said why you interested in that. Well I found all sorts of characters which somewhat explains part of how I am. I found a distant cousin who is into healing of the family. It was scary as she is the youngest, has a Masters in Psych and into therapy. Here I thought I was unique!!

I found the orgin of my family name, a group of peasant's who refused to give their animals to an oppressive king so they lived in the Forest with the animals. I knew there must be a justice bent somewhere and people who knew organize to do a protest. I knew there was a reason I felt comfortable working with East Side gang in Milwaukee and the homeless.

Who are you connected to? Who do you believe will benefit from connection with you in the future?

Do you experience any connection to Jesus in the present or maybe in the future? He was for those discounted the children, women, widows and those rejected by the establishment. He was all about peace, justice and reconciliation.

Every day I reflect on how will my day incorporate some of these opportunities for me to choose how to BE.

Advent helps us on our journey to reflect on these situations and our behavior.

What does God want you to do?

Today scripture reading:"The works the Father gave me to accomplish these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me."John 5:36

I believe we all have a purpose on this great earth of ours. Have your thought about your purpose is?
Parents are responsible for the values they teach their children. All of us have some responsibility for our action and the effect it has on others.

Advent time is a time of waiting and preparation for the One to who is to come. The prophets are speaking of justice, care for the poor, women and children who were not honored in ancient times? I often wonder if they are honored in our time.

I pray during this advent we are more aware of women and children. Keep our eyes open to the many opportunities for works of justice.

Everyone deserves good health, food and safe place to stay. Maybe the least we do is take food to the local pantry, clothes to a place giving to others, coats for kids and whatever opportunity you see as you go about your shopping for gifts for your loved ones.

I pray our generosity and caring will be a witness to Peace and love in our world.

Blessed Christmas tree

Did you know the story of the Christmas tree?
In the 8th Century the Germans had a giant oak tree that they considered sacred as a space for their pagan god Odin. they tied a young boy to the tree and we going to sacrifice him. St Boniface freed him and the people waited of their god Odin to strike Boniface dead. It didn't happen. So they realized their god was useless. Boniface pointed out a fir tree and blessed it and saying it was the night of life not death. He proclaimed the fir tree to be a symbol of peace and the Christ child.

The Christmas tree tradition most likely came to the United States with Hessian troops during the American Revolution, or with German immigrants to Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The Christmas tree is a symbol of a living Christmas spirit and brings into our lives a pleasant aroma of the forest.

As we place our Christmas tree in our homes may we also become a symbol of light and peace to those we meet.

Think of how you can make your own tree a symbol of Christ's presence in a world that so much needs peace and light in the darkness.

Witness

Today we in reading in liturgy we read about the two John's.

John the Baptizer who came as one who was pointing out the way to God. He lived a simple life in the desert. He was a prophet who called the people of his time to change their ways. Now he was beheaded because he refused to let Herod have the wife of his brother. Are we willing to stand up for what we believe even if it means we loose something? I doubt we will be beheaded but we might loose some friends and associates.

John of the Cross was a young carmelite who called his fellow carmelites to give up their ways of the world. For that they threw him in prison which after some time he escaped. John of the Cross is famous for his poetry and for his efforts to reform the carmelite order.
John of the cross had many sayings here is only one of them.

St. John of the Cross
“God is more pleased by one work, however small, done secretly, without desire that it be known, than a thousand done with desire that men know of them. (St. John of the Cross, Carmelite Mystic and Doctor of the Church)
Today we picked up the Giving Tree gifts under the Christmas tree in the hospital that were given by employees for the women's center, the patients who come without clothes and those patients who need help transportation medications and some employees children. It is done without the one receiving the gift knowing who it came from. I was touched by the generosity I witnessed.

Reflect on today's events-graces

Today was just a ordinary day, filled with people wanting to talk. It took extra energy to be there for those I met today.

It seemed like a longer day than usual. Maybe because I was on the phone with some very angry people as well.

I had a chance to say good bye to a great Director who is going to retire in couple of months. She is a gentle and caring woman and I will miss her. Yes there is a time to say good bye and to say hello. I must confess I like the hello's better.

Got to listen to the chimes ushering in a new baby.

A nurse shared her Christmas card which announced her engagement. It was a good reminder to me about the circle of life.

At the end of the day it is good for me to reflect on the day and how did it go? What were the blessings, many of course. Any place I need to say I am sorry, gosh not as I am aware of, for at least today.

I thank God for today and put aside anything not done. Put it into God's hands. If God wants me to have it, I will get it back.

I sleep very well with these little practices. How about you?

Are you being sent?

Today we celebrate the remembrance of Juan Diego, a christian Indian man from Mexico. He was passing by a hill in Tepeyac and saw a beautiful lady. He asked who she was and she said Mother of God and she told him to gather up the roses near by and take them to the bishop and ask him to build a church there in her name. When Diego went to the bishop and told him of the request he opened his cloak and the roses fell out leaving the image of Mary. This is the beginning of the Hispanic culture honoring Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe. The lady came speaking the native language and offering support to the demoralized poor people of Mexico. She asked the church to serve the poor and listen to their voice.

Today in many ways we too hear the voice of the poor.

Most of the people I talked to today who were eligible for Christmas food baskets from the staff at Saint Clare's told me that they didn't feel worthy of this gift and they were sure there were others who needed it more than them.

I have worked in the inner city with the poor and homeless and they are more concerned about others than some who have everything they need.

At this Christmas time I pray we keep our eyes open to see the needs of others and to pray that someone may reach out to those in need.

When I was missioned in the Caribbean I learned they have a saying when God cant come he sends. Are you being one sent?

Candles in the inner and outer windows

It is hard to stay focused on the real meaning of Advent. So many things going on, cookie baking, presents, Christmas cards, and letters to friends. Then there is work

Thank God for me my ministry  is a Ministry to those in need not just a job.
What is yours?

In the reflection book today it talks about candles in the window. I didn't know the meaning of this tradition. The story is that in Ireland the English were persecuting the catholics. The catholic families put a lighted candle in the window to signify to the priests in hiding it is a safe place to stay on Christmas Eve and they would be welcome. When the English questioned it they were told it was so Mary and Joseph were welcome. The English thought this a silly Irish superstition and let it be.

We can light a candle in our window as well to let those passing by it is a safe place to be in a world where so many do not feel safe.

I pray our Christmas lights whatever they may be signify to others peace, joy and a welcome to them.

May your inner light shine this week so others may know you too are a welcome person, a safe place to be welcome and to share.

Justice & compassion

The reading for today says: Elijah will indeed come and restore all things: but I tell you Elijah has already come"(Matt 17:11-12)

Today we also remember Thomas Merton the cistersian monk who promoted justice. We see all types of injustice on the TV and in the paper.

As we went out today to buy our Christmas tree and groceries, I encountered the Red Kettle of Salvation Army. Why are there so many homeless in a country that has so much and had fabulous Black Friday.

In the paper today is about another paper plant closing in our area and more unemployed.

Last night at Hospital Christmas lighting,I checked the giving tree in the atrium. It is a tree that has ornaments for those in need and many were taken with gifts placed under the tree by employees for those in need.

At the store today we bought food items to take to Church for Church pantry. The need far exceeds the items donated.

Today, I did feel abit guilty baking peanut butter spritz, then I realized we are doing what we can. What is important is that I do not behave in a way that creates more injustice.

I pray I may have the strength to bring God's justice and compassion where I am called to be present.

Advent patience

Today's reflection is on advent patience. I am glad I read it before I went out in search of presents for my brother. I was glad to get home again. For one here it is very cold,14 degrees. No point in waiting for it to get warmer, not this time of the year.

I have today off and a time to do what I want. That happens so seldom. Usually on my day off I am going to visit my brother which is a all day venture.

So I decided to do some of my Christmas shopping. I thought during the week there wouldn't be so many people shopping.  Wrong! Trying to back out of my parking space almost go whacked in the parking lot. Coming home two cars cut in front of me on the freeway. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry. I thank God for some time to reflect today and get centered before I ventured out into the people hurrying. Constantly hurrying and not getting very far. With the two cars who passed me,  we ended up at the stop light at same time.

Advent theme is one of patient waiting. A awaiting that is not enduring but one that is looking forward with hope.

I pray we can slow down and stop and enjoy the present moment. Take time to see the dawn and the moon at night, time to greet friends and have time to share. Time to live in the present moment instead of the planning for the next moment.

Have a blessed advent Friday of 2nd week of Advent.

Our many yes committments

Today in the catholic church we celebrate God's gift of Mary's birth without sin. Later at the Annunciation we celebrate her saying yes to becoming the mother of Jesus.

We all have said yes to things we were not sure of but in faith we gave our consent our committed yes.

I think of my friends who are married and said yes when they were asked "for better or for worse" Some are celebrating anniversary's of their marriage. I am know many things happened to stress the yes, but they made it through those times.

When I said yes, when I made my vows as a religous Sister I didnt dream of celebrating my 50th anniversary. That yes has had its moments as well.

What are the things you have said yes to. Do you pray for the grace to be faithful to your yes. Hard yes committments stress our faith but may we look at the faith of Mary and have courage. Say a prayer for the grace to be faithful to the many yes committments in your life.

thank you for Roberta's life

Today, I was present at the funeral of our friend Roberta. She was only 57. So many people came to witness to her life and her friendship.

It was painful to see her husband's grief, her son Matt crying and daughter Erin holding on to her dad's hand.

Many persons spoke of Roberta as mentor, full of life, looking at new possibilities, sharing her joy, her time with her girl friends on shopping spree wearing reindeer horns, getting her toe nails painted with Sister Lois and many other joyful moments. A woman full of life, giving life and her love to others.

I believe she didn't see this as extra ordinary but just herself. She would stop by my office to just chat smile and go on her way. She left me feeling as if an angel just visited, and it did.

She lived life in the fullest, one of deep faith and love for her family, friends and her God with a special devotion to Mary mother of Jesus.

Don't you wonder what would be said of us today. I pray to follow the example of one who lived as God called her to live. May we all pray for the gift of selflessness and giving of our selves to others with a deepening of faith.

Presence

On the TV, radio and in the paper we hear of all the sales, deals etc.

One year I gave gift certificates that I made for things I knew the person would like such as take you out to eat, coffee and conversation, walk in the night under the stars, once a week time to talk and listen and whatever you would like. That was a fun thing to do.

How well do you know your friends or what your children would like to do with you? This year think about if you would give them a gift certificate of your presence? After all if we really need some earthly thing dont we usually buy it anyway!

It most likely would cost more than most gifts as these days time is a very precious gift. One gift we seldom have to give to ourselves to do what we would like. I've 4 books someone gave me and I havent had time to read one.
Hope I give myself a certificate of some time to just sit in the chair, read and drink the hot chocolate I bought this weekend.

Consider a gifts of presence.

Possible

In toady's reading in scripture is about healing of one who was paralyzed. He believed it was possible and it happened.

When I was a child they would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Whatever I answered no one ever told me it wasn't possible. Believing is part of making something possible, or having someone else believe in you makes one believe it is possible.

If you think back I am sure you can count the things that have happened that you never thought were possible but they are because you or someone else believed they were possible.

During these days of Advent preparation for the remembrance of the coming of Christ we could believe in someones dream and help them believe it is possible.

In this crazy busy world we can become too self centered and forget the possibility of helping someone to achieve their dream. Have you encouraged the children in your life to believe their dreams are possible? It is never too late to do so.

darkness and light

Today the Sisters from the Holy Spirit of the North Local community went to Marathon for advent reflection on Dark and Light. Yes, there are more of us SSM's around.

We reflected on our experience as children of the dark. We shared with another person. We then looked at Dec being a time of darkness, plants in the earth, time of rest, watching and waiting. Even the chipmunks have gone for a winters nap.
The darkness of December is also a time to enjoy the beauty of the stars in the sky. If you don't have a lot of street lights you can see the beauty of the magnitude of the heavens. I enjoy night time when in bed I can see the stars and the moon shines in my room.

In Dec when there is less light our lives do seem to cycle down, we become less outward busy or so it seems to me. A time to reflect and renew ourselves.

We all have times of darkness in our lives but advent is a time of hope and reaching out to the other in darkness. I am sure each of us can encounter someone in our day that we can reach out to and bring spirit of hope.

The time of darkness in our life can be a time for us to listen, listen to what God might be saying or asking of us. The same as when we are in natural darkness we tend to listen more attentively.

Christmas is a time of light, where Jesus comes as a light to warm the world. We reflected on light that warms, the light we can see in the eye of another. The call for each of us to be a light to another.

It was good time to take some space to reflect to take the time to cycle down in the business of our days. I found it refreshing. Isn't this what Christmas is all about?

Missing a friend

Today in the advent reading it speaks about the book When bad things happen to good people by Rabbi Harold Kushner. It speaks of the wish to drive sorrow out of our lives. We know everyone experiences sorrow in their life at sometime. It is how we deal with the sorrow that makes the difference and allows us to reach out to others who are experiencing sorrow.

Today we are in sorrow at the death of a dear friend Roberta Swift. She died this morning. For the past 3 years she suffered the effects of Gullian-Barre syndrome. She never gave up hope, was cheerful, and struggled to maintain as much independence as she could.

She also is the dear friend of Sister Lois as they both worked together in Mission and culture for Ministry Health care. I know all of you reading this do not know her but know she was a woman of integrity, compassion and filled with hope.

We pray today in support of Roberta's family that they too may know the support of others. May we all continue to strive to shape just cultures. This was so much a part of what Roberta was also committed to.

What do you believe in?

In Scripture reading of Matthew today blind men approached Jesus asking him to heal them. He asked them do you believe I can do this? They said yes, his reply was "let it be done according to your faith."

In my life time I have had many beliefs. I believed in Santa, the tooth fairy, even the power of a rabbit foot. I believed my parents loved me and would care for me.

As I grew I believed in people's goodness, the ability of all of us to reach out to others. I leaned to believe in the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. I believed in God's call to me to bring the good news of his Love to all I meet and I accepted his invitation to become a Religious Sister.

Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birthday. For Christians it is the believe that God had compassion and mercy on us and sent his Son Jesus to come to us as teacher, healer, wonder worker, one who can tell us of the Love of the Father. Some of the songs in Church speak of wonder worker. My favorite song of advent season is O come O come Emmanuel.

Take some time and reflect on what do you believe in today?

I pray for us to be healed of our doubts, fears and worries of this day. May we too reach out to Jesus and ask Him to heal us of what we need healed so we can be free to celebrate His birthday. A true day of Peace

Rock foundation

Today's reading was about "wise man who built his house on rock"I couldn't help but think of the foundress of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.

Mother Frances came to my mind today as I participated in the International Finance board meeting for the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. We just completed a 1 1/2 day meeting. We ended by reviewing budgets of the various parts of the community which were Italy+Tanzania Africa, Germany-Austria, Brazil, and the US/Caribbean.
Each leader from these areas presented their budgets with their plans for 2012.

It wasn't the budgets so much that made me think of Mother Frances but the wonder of the work being done in development of peoples, dignity for Women and children, medical care for those in need, job training to help those involved to be self sufficient, school for teaching of children, day cares, retirement centers and many more works for the People of God.

I am sure Mother Frances smiled down and was pleased to what extent the little community she founded has become a rock for so many in need.

It truly is a blessing to be a member of a International community and to witness the care for the people of God in various parts of the world. I pray we may continue to be one and to serve those in need especially the poor.

Come and see

Today is the feast of Saint Andrew.
Although little is mentioned in the Book of Acts regarding the life of St. Andrew, much can be learned through St. Andrew's life. He and Saint Peter gave up their lifelong careers and lifestyles, leaving everything behind, to follow Jesus. Their undying faith in a difficult world is an inspiration to all.

In scripture it gives  the story of Jesus meeting Andrew and his brother Peter and Jesus said come follow me. In another Gospel it gives Andrew as a disciple of John. John's disciples ask his who Jesus is and he say he is the One who is to come. Andrew they goes to Jesus and say where do you live? Jesus says come and see.

As we approach Christmas which is the celebration of Jesus birth not celebration of gifts for me. What do I need to do to more closely follow Jesus and bring others to know him? Could I invite someone to come and see, to know more about Jesus?

I believe that each of us do honor and participate in the various celebrations of our own religious tradition.

How can I make Christmas more meaningful in my life?
For it is in giving we receive.

What did you see today?

Today Luke in his comment says blessed are the eyes that see what you see" What did you see today? Did you see the presence of God unexpectedly?

Advent season calls us to see the world around us with the eyes of God. Faith is what helps us realize it is the touch of God that is in everything I see and in all relationships.

Today I saw a older lady who can barely walk struggling to come into Saint Clare's to volunteer. She says she is happy to give to others and be a part of something. I forgot my knee hurt somewhat.

I talked to several people on the phone who were upset and just needed someone to talk to. I wondered did God send them to me. One lady called and I notice she called the clinic and didn't want to go to her appointment.
When I talked to her she just wanted me to pray for her. I don't know where she got my phone number. It didn't matter.

I talked to a homeless mother who does work at Ministry and all she wanted was for me to put a ball on the giving tree for a truck for her little son.

Thank you God for giving me these experiences today and as I reflect on my day tonight may I see you more clearly in all of them. I pray for you to open my eyes to see your love in my daily life and to guide me in how you wish me to respond to the broken lives and hurting world.

What did you see today?

Faith in healing power of Jesus

Today the reading is about the centurion(officer of Jewish army) asking Jesus to come and heal his servant. Strange request as servants were considered property and the centurion could easily get another one without any trouble.

Jesus told him his faith that allowed Jesus to heal the servant.

I asked myself do I have faith when I ask for needs or is it just hoping it will happen. Faith is stronger conviction that God will do what is best in the situation, which just might not be what I am thinking will happen.

The centurion also demonstrated care for his servant and did not consider him just disposable property. I found myself thinking how do I treat those with whom I have no relationship, do I pray for those in need or just those who are in my circle?

On this 2nd day of Advent preparation I pray that I may be more aware of the needs of others and pray for an increase in faith. (Little more doesn't hurt.)

ADVENT SUNDAY

Today is the first Sunday of advent. The preparation time for remembering Christ's Birthday and what it means to me as a follower of Jesus, a light to the world.

Isaiah preaches our God is a God of beginnings. We can take a moment and reflect on all the new beginnings in our lives. Advent is a time not only of preparation but of waiting, watching, lest we miss the opportunity for a new beginning, something new God would like to re-create in us.

Ministry health through Sister Lois has provided an advent refection book for Senior leaders. Each day as we prepare for Christ's birthday I may take some reflections from this daily reflection book and share them with you.

The beginning reflection is one about waiting. The Jewish people waited for the coming of the Messiah for liberation and justice.

Each day while at Ministry I see people waiting, in surgical waiting room, outside ICU, in Family birth center and in the emergency room. I have come to learn to wait. It hasn't always been a easy task to master. Today I waited in line in Walgreen's, now that doesn't seem the same kind of waiting as in other circumstances. But believe it or not I was peaceful as the lady in front of me charged out 4 little piles of a few things she had for other people. I found myself saying God teach me how to wait with peace. I don't know what it meant to the lady but it was an opportunity to be at peace in a hurried world, much needed I think.

I wish you a blessed time of waiting and watching as you prepare to celebrate Christ entering into your life and being re-born again as a light for this troubled world.

Happy thanksgiving

So many things to be thankful for today.
Morning prayer today was Psalm 138. "I thank you Lord, with all my heart."" I give thanks to your name for your merciful love an your and your faithfulness."

How true this has been in my life journey. I pray on this day you too may have a few moments to reflect on God's goodness, faithfulness and merciful love in your life.
Having recieved, we give the same to others.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND THOSE YOU LOVE

Thanksgiving day tomorrow

May God protect you and your family on the family feast day. May you know support of friends if this day is a hard one for you.

Think of the reasons you are thankful and Praise God giver of all good

3 DAYS UNTIL THANKSGIVING

Think of 3 gifts, blessings or situations in which you are thankful to God. Say a prayer of thanksgiving for them.

I know I ask God for many things, blessings, help for others. Sometimes I forget to say thank you to God.

This is a good time to change that for St. John said God is Love. I love that and have experienced it. Thank you God for all the love shown to me and to those I pray for.

Monday, November 21, 2011

4 days until thanksgiving

There are 4 days until Thanksgiving day. I am thankful for all of you. I pray for your special needs from today until thanksgiving day.

Think of 4 friends you are thankful for and if possible tell them. Pray for them as well until thanksgiving day.

What you did not do for one of these you did not do for me

Today is the last day of the Year in the Catholic calendar. The Scripture reading for today is like a review of the past year in terms of our reaching out to others.

In Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus says if you didn't reach out to those in need you didn't reach out to him. He mentions the thirsty, hungry, naked, the stranger and those in prison.

How can we do what he asks of us?

The paper today if full of articles about food pantry's. Alot more people have lost their jobs. It looks like more to come.
Brokaw paper mill =445 workers.
Closing Rothschild mail sorting plant=155 workers.

Black Friday is coming. It  encourages us to spend $ or be not with it. Instead we could give a gift certificate of our time and talent to someone. I am sure a lonely person would appreciate our visit. I would appreciate time with my friends, much more valued than a present.

Ministry Saint Clare's has Clare's closet in the Emergency Department which accepts clothes to be used for patients who come to the hospital ill prepared to go home without proper clothes. If any of us came to the hospital and had our clothes cut off, or had a procedure that our clothes do not fit, I am sure we would appreciate something appropriate to wear home.

Visiting the sick is possible as a volunteer at both Medical facilities. Or perhaps you can volunteer from your church to visit those who are home bound. Take meals on wheels or volunteer to provide rides to those need. the volunteer section in the paper has many ideas on how to reach out to others.

Most of us have the opportunity to work with persons from a culture other than our own. It is an opportunity to reach out, help the person feel welcome and to learn something about their culture and customs. Extending ourselves to them.

As we end the year and start the season of preparing remembering Christ's coming we can take a few moments and look to how we have and can reach out to others.

As you volunteer/reach out to others you will be surprised to find you gained more than you realized.

Jesus coming for supper tonight

Today reading is about Zaccheus. People didnt like him he was a tax collector you know like the IRS you dont want to see. His friends were in the same business. He wanted to see Jesus and because he wasnt accepted and was very short he climbed up a tree to see him. Jesus saw him and said come down Zaccheus and I am coming to your house tonight for supper. Whow.

What if Jesus saw you today and said I am coming for supper at your house tonight?

faith and asking

Today is one of my favorite scripture stories. It is of the blind man who hears a commotion. He asks what is going on. They tell him Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. He hollers out "Jesus, son of David have pity oh me"
Like any other gathering they tell him be quiet but he hollers the louder. "Jesus son of David have pity on me" Jesus hear this and asks he be brought to him. Jesus asks "what do you want of me?" the blind man answers "Please Lord let me see" Jesus told him "your faith has saved you" and immediately he could see.

Jesus never forces himself on us. When ask for what I need do I do so believing Jesus will hear me and answer my prayer? Or do I believe just in case it might be true.

We pray for many things but do we have the faith needed for God to interact with us? Ask and you shall receive. Now the gift does not always look like what I had hoped it would look like. In looking back at all the prayers where I asked for something specific many times it was  not what I thought it should be but just what was needed in the situation.

In our culture today it is not cool to ask for what we need, to even cry out. Our culture says we need to find a way to help ourselves and not ask others.

In the West Indies where I ministered for 10 years it is strongly believed when God can't come he sends.
Do we take time to recognize those who are sent as a response to our prayer " Please help me"
Perhaps we are the one sent. Are you prepared to be sent as God's gift to another who has said "Lord please help me?"

What are your talents

Today the reflection on the Gospel is about the Master giving his workers various talents. Some  worker used their talents and also acquired more talents to share with the Master when he returned. One worker buried his as he was afraid of the Master.

God is the Master. God has given each of us talents. Some persons I know have used their talents and acquired more talents. In thinking of that some things I now know how to do well I learned by education, by watching others and by trying things out.

Can you list your talents? Have you learned any new ones along the years? Sometimes by practicing what we see we learn we have a talent for something which we didn't even know we had.

I did share I went to the cranberry fest in Warrens. I had a piece of cranberry pie there and loved it. I looked for a recipe and decided I would make a cranberry pie. Now I have not made any pie from scratch in my 75 years. After the 2nd try I feel it tastes as good as the one I bought and I feel a sense of pride that I now can say I made a pie and can make another one with confidence. Now that is not a big thing but it pleased me and hopefully those who has a piece of the pie.

I believe I am a good counselor but that came after years and watching others and learning to listen.

On this day spend a few moments thanking God for the talents that have been given to you. Spend some time on reflecting on acquiring new talents that you can share with others.

Praise God for the journey.

Reading spiritually revisited

In September I commented on the practice of spiritual reading and reading spiritually. Today, I had some relax time to read the paper. I did so wondering what is there in the paper that can nourish me spiritually today and for the week.

Here a some things that came to my attention as I read the paper today:

USA weekend: Embrace the opportunities: " I have found each decade, each age, has opportunities that weren't actually there in previous time. They've been a joy at each stage of my life" Last week I had many opportunities to experience the presence of God. I am looking forward to this week.

wausau daily herald Volunteer finds satisfaction helping others.  She learned it at home from her mother helping those who stopped by that were hungry. she now volunteers at church food pantry. she said "there is satisfaction in helping someone, doing something good for someone besides yourself. And that's what it's all about if you a Christian" there are many volunteer opportunities available to help others and for me to get out of my comfort zone. Try it you'll like it.

Take it slow: family focuses on fewer outside activities
"Families who spend time together while their children are young tend to have stronger family bond for decades." " A national slow family movement has sprung up to counter the hectic modern hectic lifestyle.
Surprisingly that applies to those of us in religious life as well. It is important for the two of us to have our evening meal together and share how the day went, an opportunity to reflect on where was God in all of it.

Packers benefit from Well's brains brawn: "Scott Wells packers center his relative anonymity is a sign of excellence.""He doesn't get the recognition he deserves, but he is a great player and we all know that". Wells prefers to defer credit to his teammates. Here a person who we can say understands servant mentality not keeping the credit all for himself.

Reading the paper can just be something I do or it can be an opportunity to read spiritually and obtain some food for the soul for the week ahead.

Have a super week, full of surprises, enjoy the stage of life you are in and I pray you will find new opportunities to be of service to others.

Who does your behavior say you are?

Today is the rememberance day of Saint Charles Borromero He once said" be sure you first preach by the way you live.If you do not people will notice that you say one thing, but live otherwise, and your words will bring only cynical laughter and dersive shake of he head"

It reminded me of the story of St.Francis asking several bothers to go out to preach but walk through town and saying nothing. They came back and then asked when are we going back to preach. He said you just did.

Behavior, roles and example are very interesting especially if you are not aware of the various roles you play.

I myself thought of this today on my way to visit my brother. What are my roles? I am a sister to my brother, a religous Sister, representative of the Catholic church, nurse, friend, companion, advocate, counselor, member of a relgious community that shares in common, acquaintance, employee in ministry, board member, individual person, one who likes to have enjoyment and sometimes stirs up life, one who practices centering prayer, reflection of God and there are more roles I am sure. I also represent all the perceptions and notions you have of these various roles. Now the question is how does my behavior match up with how I believe I should be in each of these roles? Most of the time we are in more than one role at a time.

Take some time to contemplate the various roles you are in one day.

If you are a parent be aware your behavior is teaching your children how to be a parent. That is true of each of the roles, we teach others how we feel the role should be. They then  measure us against what they feel the role be. Hopefully there is a match.

miracles happen every day--angels appear

Today was very moving day for me. I met with a man deep in grief as he shared his wife's news of strange type of cancer of the bone.  Sobbing he shared his story of estrangement, anger, loss of hope, going to chapel to challenge and aggravate God.

God extended love and compassion to him, leading him  to come to realization his wife is 1/2 of him. I never really realized that. I am loosing 1/2 of myself.

He related after he stopped aggravating God, He said God told him "You are to be her rock. Go and hold her hand, be there for her."  There was no messages from God about the life journey of this man. He  was received as the father received his prodigal son.

He spoke of the experience of  positive energy which he is relating to his wife as he holds her hand. He spoke of the miracle he received. Spoke of being told hold you wife's hand be there for her.  He said"I feel I experienced a miracle and I did not believe in miracles much less the God I was raised to know."

He now is a man of hope, full of strength for his wife. He now is ready to give back.

He asked to speak with me as he said I was told to share the story with you, so now you hold it.

I feel I experienced a miracle today as my angel guided me to that hospital room, to invite this man to speake with me and to listen to this man. I only invited him as I felt I was needing to speak with him.

After we spoke I went and talked with his wife and she indeed did look better, smiling and even had some pink in her cheeks.

If you have a moment say a prayer for him and his wife. This journey has just begun. I am confident of  God's guidance along the way.

How is your week going and its only Wed!!

What a week so far, was it really more busy than usual or does it just seem that way?

Monday Halloween I am grateful we had the trick or treat kids on Sunday in the day light. I am saddened that parents have to check the candy to be sure nothing was put in to harm their child. Gone are the good ole days when we just went out and were free and happy.

Tuesday All Saints. I was thinking I couldn't think of a saint that had life completely without suffering in their day. Many were ignore, shunned, labeled crazy and considered marginalized.

In the history of our community at the end of our foundress life, the women entering the community did not know she was the foundress. She was living in community with them and they did not know who she was. She was forbidden to let anyone know she was the foundress. Joan of Arc burned at the stake, Edith Stein, carmelite Sister killed in gas chambers during WWII, Oscar Romero shot while saying Mass, and there are more. As a young nun I prayed to become a saint so far I haven't reconsidered.

Today we prayed for those who have died. We pray that they will enjoy the face of God. We don't know how or when this happens but we do know we are in communion as we pray for them.

In my experience praying for others whether living or gone before me helps me. It is really hard to pray for someone and not feel some connection to them. A good lesson for those we sometimes are upset with, or those feel at a distance from, or maybe those we even distance ourselves from.

Who knows what tomorrow brings but I know God gives me the graces I need for each day and tomorrow isn't here yet!

Halloween-All Hallows Eve

There is little know today as to the orgin of Halloween.
I am mentioning it today because in different cities they are starting the trick or treat routine tomorrow.

In the Catholic faith Halloween, which comes from the word All Hallows Eve is tied directly to All Saints Day celebrated on November 1 of each year to commemorate the old saints who have past on.

It is believed that the “saints" are people who were heroes, martyrs, persons of example for us in living our Christian Faith. People like St. Francis, St. Clare, Maximilian Kobe and others.

Halloween was never meant to be a frightful time. A time of ghosts, people raising from the dead to scare us or unearthly things to harm us.

We can only change this culture of fear with our friends and families. We can encourage the children to sell their candy to the dentist who will use it to give to soldiers or needy children who do not get candy.

It also is a time for us to be aware of how much social media affect the children by their choice of who they want to represent at Halloween.

Some people use the costumes to act out in ways they would never want to be seen acting out.

we can end the day by remembering in prayer all those people of example who have gone before us and say a prayer of thanksgiving for their example.

I pray you enjoy the children who may come by your home by greeting them in a way that is counter cultural.

United in purpose and mission

October 24 we celebrated the official day of the United Nations. When I was in high school many many years ago I belonged to a United Nations club as part of civics class to study its structure and purpose. The purpose of the UN is the facilitation of cooperation in international law, security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achievement of world peace. (how did I do?)

Reflection of this day and the purpose I think they copied the purpose from the guidelines of my of religous community. The Guidelines by which we live our lines our purpose is to further the kingdom of God through gospel living and service to others especially the poor.
I was refecting on the countries from which the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother come from. Being in a international community provided me with a rich heritage of variety of ways of experiencing God, of worship, prayer, service and variety of way we live in community.

In my religious life I have had the privilege of living with Sisters from many different counties which provided  a challenge to my own understanding of what it means to be an American. I had not ever been called that until I lived in St. Lucia West Indies. One person asked me what nationality are you? I said German and they said or you a from Germany. I said no I am from the United States and they said oh then you are a American. I asked myself what is that and do I ascribe those characteristics to myself? Have you ever thougth of yourself as an American and what does that mean to you?

I am ever grateful to have the opportunity to live with so many Sisters from other countries. They have enriched my life.

I may have forgotten someone but here are some of the nations  from which my Sisters come:
Austria        Bahamas      Brazil      Belise   Colombia   Germany    Grenada      Goyna       Guyna     Ireland
Italy   Korea   NativeAmerican   Phillippines
Poland    Switzerland   St Lucia     Tanzania Africa and United States.
Provide for  your self a great opportunity for growth. Really know someone from another nation/country and you will also learn something surprising about yourself.

If we as a religious mosaic of variety of persons with different customs, beliefs and formation are striving to work together to bring to peoples experience the love of God surely we can be a witness this is possible.

Love God, self and neighbor

You may wonder about the order of this saying.

Today we are  told to Love God with our whole heart, mind and soul and our neighbor as ourselves. Matthew 22:34-40 records Jesus saying loving God is the 1st commandment and loving neighbor as ourselves is the 2nd commandment. All other commandments included in these two.

As I reflected on this I came to realize where I don't love myself that is also where I do not act lovingly to my neighbor.

Most of it is simple stuff like I love to find out what is going on with almost everything. When I find out do I share it in a way that is gossip. Now gossip can smudge the name of another person. I believe I work hard how do I react when I don't feel the other person is working as hard as I perceive I am?

It is good once in awhile to sit down and look at what do I not love about myself. These are the very things that I will also act negatively toward my neighbor. If I don't appreciate it in myself I surely wont appreciate it in my neighbor.

Through taking some time each day and looking lovingly at myself I will come to act more lovingly toward my neighbor. God loves me unconditionally. If I believe I am a  reflection of God can I do the same.

Do No Harm-Domestic Violence awareness month

Today we celebrate St. Luke. He was not only a evangelist but a physician. You can read in your Bible the stories he relates of how Jesus was with the poor.

Father God you chose Luke the Evangelist to reveal by preaching and writing the mystery of your love
for the poor.

Physicians are also honored today in Catholic centers with a special Mass for doctors by the Bishop of the Church. Physicians take a oath to do no harm.

This also is  Domestic Violence awareness month. It would do us all good to take an oath to do no harm and to behave in a non violent way toward others.
We don't often think we engage in domestic violence. Are you aware of some of the signs, like not letting those who we love and live with have their own friends. Refusing to talk or say when we are upset what we are upset about. Not allowing the other to have any personal free time.

These are just some of the signs but there are more and helpful hints of how to deal with this issue on the domestic violence web site.

Today let us be thankful of the positive good relationships we are in. Tell those we love we appreciate them.

Consider taking a personal commitment to do no harm which may be as simple as saying only good about the other and no gossiping. If each of us did these little things the world would be much less violent.

Give to God what is God's

In the Scripture today Jesus says "Give to God what is God's."
What do you have that belongs to God? What do you have to give back?

For me I am grateful for my vocation to Religious life. I can give back to God and others by living religious life authentically and being me. God called me just as I am.

Are you grateful for your vocation in life whether married, single or religious?

I never dreamed I would have a profession, a ministry where I can be of service to others, friends that are faithful and a great support system. I have many gifts, talents and health.

Honestly,on some days I don't feel like giving anything to anyone. When that happens I know it is time to take a time out. I have continuously experienced that God will provide for me the continued grace and strength to be faithful to all that has been given to me. But I have the responsibility to take care of myself as well. Sometimes I forget myself in that mix of things. I know the word NO is a very empowering word. Sometimes, I could be used more so I  don't give myselves away.

I can imagine for you who are parents that is a hard thing to do, to take time for yourself. I know re-creation time is needed by us all. Yes, even you and me.

Today the neighbor lady came to the door with her son and daughter selling boy scout popcorn. I said I haven't seen you much lately, she said oh we have football, basketball practicee twice a week and then games, plus scouts. I doubt she has alot of time to just be for herself.

Praise God we have the opportunity to give back. I pray to be aware of the opportunities this week to do just that.

I pray the same for you.

Reflections on past week

As I said last refection I felt the past week went by with a host of emotions, feelings and what did really happen. I did take a nap today, wonderful practice for healing and now I feel I can share some things with you.

Monday 10 was the remembrance of Mollie Rogers. She was know as Sister Mary Joseph. She is the foundress of the Maryknoll Sisters. Now why is that of any significance? As a teen my mother attended Mother of Perpetual help devotions every Tues night and dragged, I mean took me along. The only think I liked about this weekly church happening, was to be able to pick up the Maryknoll magazine in the back of church and see all the exciting things the Sisters were doing with poor people.
Later when in Nursing school ,at age of 19 taught by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother,  I experienced God calling me to become a bearer of good news as a religious woman. I wanted to be a Maryknoll and did apply but they said wait until you finished Nursing School. Back then wait was a unfamiliar word to me. For those who know me see how I have grown.(smile) I responded by praying the stations of the Sorrowful Mother to become a Maryknoll.
While working in Maternity department nursery there was a statue of baby Jesus with inscription Come follow me. Every time I worked I turned it around so I could see it.

Do you believe God sends signs? Well let me tell you of a powerful one. As student nurses we were required to make a annual retreat. Catholic, protestant it didn't matter you were there. The priest my freshman year was a Passionist religious order priest. They wore a symbol on their clothing which looked like a police badge to me at that time. I said to God if  you want me to be a Sister he will come down from the table where he was sitting and tap me on the shoulder and ask me to come and talk to him. At the end of the conference before we all left church behold he came down tapped me on the shoulder and said I need to speak with you. Now it was about something the head of the school thought I knew something about, like where had one of our classmates disappeared to. However a sign is a sign no matter how it comes about.
the rest of that story later. I entered the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother a year later.

Have you asked God for any signs for discernment for yourself? If not try it and be surprised.
Also you never know what effect parents have on their children by the things they involve them in. Think about it

Here I am Lord I think!

What a week. I am not sure what really went on this week. I will take some time this weekend to process it all. A whole mixture of feelings of sadness, anger, hope, possibilities. I guess that pretty much sums up why I feel tired today which is the end of my week at work. I hope to take sometime this week to review the events of the week and reflect on God's gift in it all.

Tomorrow I  will travel 2hrs to visit my brother in his assisted living situation. We go out to eat and gab. There is not a lot of news on his side but we are enjoying each others company and finally bonding as brother and sister. I am glad my cold is over as I would not go if I thought I would give it to him.

Today is the First Day of Sukkot a Jewish festival which Jesus would have had as part of his life.
The Jewish festival known as Sukkot (“sue-COAT”)—“booths”—involves two apparent opposites: gathering and scattering. It’s a harvest festival, but it also commemorates the 40-year journey of the Israelites in the desert, when they lived in temporary shelters (booths). Originally Jews making the Sukkot pilgrimage to sacrifice in the Temple would stay in tents or booths while they were in Jerusalem. The practice continues today in the construction of open outdoor shelters Jews live in during the seven days of Sukkot—if it rains, one rabbi in the Talmud ruled, the sign that you can go in is if the soup gets too watery! Like the Jewish people, we are called to be grateful for God’s gifts and presence with us on the journey of faith.

It is a good remembrance for me that no matter how many stories I heard this past week, how much pain and the joyful ones they are all part of the journey and what is the gift from God for me.

I hope you too get a few moments this weekend to look at the past weeks events whatever the theme or event and find the gift there for you.

God's saving grace in Jesus

This week is 28th week in ordinary time. The readings for the week are all from Paul. Paul's theme is we are humans and can't save ourselves. I know that for sure.

God revealed his saving grace through Jesus. The grace of this saving grace is available to all through faith. If we believe in Jesus' acts and words we will also do good to others. The readings from Paul all week show how God's grace is working. We are encouraged to live as people saved.

Each day I need to pray for the gift of grace and faith to live as a saved person. I don't know about you but for me some of daily enounters lead to feelings and thoughts if acted on would not be actions of a saved person.

During this week I pray to keep in mind Jesus saved me and I pray to behave accordingly doing good wherever I can.

Paul in his letter to the philippians said "My God will fully supply whatever you need." I am counting on it.

This past week my energy has been zapped with a very bad cold. I beleive as I have gotten older I bounce back slower and my resistence is lower. Hate to admit that but it is the reality. I will need aditional help this week as my energy bucket isnt full yet. Say a prayer for me as well when you have a moment. Much appreciated. Thank you

Yom Kippur is tomorrow -what can we learn

In the Jewish religion tomorrow is the beginning of Yom Kippur. For Christians we need to be aware that Jesus was also involved in Yom Kippur. What can we learn from Yom Kippur?
The name "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement," and that pretty much explains what the holiday is. It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year.
Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur.

You can clearly see examples of these infractions in the Yom Kippur liturgy, for instance in this excerpt from Al Khet:

For the sin that we have committed under stress or through choice;
For the sin that we have committed in stubbornness or in error;
For the sin that we have committed in the evil meditations of the heart;
For the sin that we have committed by word of mouth;
For the sin that we have committed through abuse of power;
For the sin that we have committed by exploitation of neighbors;

For all these sins, O God of forgiveness, bear with us, pardon us, forgive us!

In  listening to the teaching of Jesus we hear many of these words such as  go to the one you offended before you bring your gift to the altar.

I pray in the spirit of atonement we also can reach out to those we have offended. Often I hear said God knows me and forgives me. True but what about seeking forgiveness from others we have wronged.

LISTENING TO MY GUARDIAN ANGEL

Earlier this week we celebrated our guardian angels. In the church there is special mention on many days of holy people to remember, events and the special guides God has for each of us. It is our belief that each of us has been given a angel to be our guardian. Scripture has many references to angels and their role in our lives.
Over the years I have learned to hear the voice of my angel.

Yesterday as I was leaving my driveway for work I looked both ways and saw nothing, in a second the voice said wait a minute and behold a motorcycle driver sped by. I am grateful for the angel as I would have surely hit the person straight on. I hear my angel saying go to this floor and visit and there is someone there I didn't expect that needed something I could provide. I am grateful for this frequent guiding voice in my life.
Have you ever thought of the fact you also have an angel? Ask your angel to speak to you to guide you and you will be surprised. I have heard positive encouragement and also warnings like Don't go there? I headed the warning and was spared harm and grief.
Get to know your angel and you will also be grateful.

RESPECT FOR LIFE

In the Catholic churches the 1st Sunday of October is designated as Respect for Life Sunday. It is a reminder for us to respect all life

The priest today in his homily said be glad you are alive. Today you are alive so you can extend respect to the world.

We often don't think of ourselves in these remembrance days

I found myself thinking of who are the people I come in contact with whose life is not respected. I couldn't help but think of the older people I meet daily whose families are at a distance and they are facing a illness. They are often all alone and in less than respectful situations. Is there someone elderly you can extend yourself to that will let them know they are not forgotten and are respected.
I also found myself thinking of the many homeless children, children needing school lunch because their parents have no jobs, means to assist them. Food panties in our area are low of food I am sure they are in your area as well. When you go shopping this week could you buy something and take it to a pantry in your area?

In refecting on respecting others what are some ways you could show respect for yourself? In your own quiet space maybe take a little time for your own reflection on what you do to respect yourself and thereby be more able to show respect to others.
